The Longhaired Dachshund
Dog
A Hound with Many Terrier
Characteristics.
The Longhaired
Dachshund has distinctive long,
silky hair, soft, sleek and glistening, and often slightly
wavy. It should be longer under the neck, on the underside
of the body, and especially on the ears, and behind the legs,
becoming there a pronounced feather, and attaining its
greatest length on the underside of the tail. The coat gives
the Longhaired Dachshund an elegant appearance. His
gracefully carried tail is a prolongation of the
spine and forms a veritable flag.
The Dackel is a clever breed, lively and courageous even
to the point of rashness, definitely not shy. Their beauty,
poise and very alert attitude gives them an edge at the dog
shows. They make great fun loving pets whose exercise
needs are minimal, and they adapt well to city life.
Dachshund puppies are trainable, maturing to
become superb loyal family members
and exceptional watchdogs.
The
Shorthaired Dachshund or
Smooth Dachshund Dog.
The Name "Dachshund" (dachs, badger; hund,
dog)
reveals and conceals the origin of the breed. Dachshunds
are very tenacious hunting dogs, Terrier-like in working
skills but with the nose and voice of a hound. Often hunted
in packs, they were bred for hunting ferocious badgers
(in Europe) and would follow them right into
their burrows underground.
The coat of the Smooth, or Shorthaired Dachshund is
short, smooth and shining. It should be neither too long nor
too thick. The ears of the Smooth Dachshund should not be
leathery. The tail gradually tapering to a point, is well, but
not too richly haired. Long sleek bristles on the underside
are considered a patch of strong-growing hair, not a fault.
The Dachsie is a clever breed, lively and courageous even
to the point of rashness, definitely not shy. Their beauty,
poise and very alert attitude gives them an edge at the dog
shows. They make great fun loving pets whose exercise
needs are minimal, and they adapt well to city life.

The
Wirehaired Dachshund
Lively and Courageous
Like the Longhaired variety, the Wirehaired
Dachshund, was also derived from the Shorthaired
Dachshund. He was developed in Germany and bred to
terriers with wiry coats to improve the very protective and
weather resistant qualities of his double jacket and to add
terrier spark and spunk to his temperament for facing his
quarry, the badger. They are bred in two sizes, the
Standard and the Miniature or Mini.
The Wirehaired Dachshund is a very clever breed
a lightening fast digger, lively and courageous even to the
point of rashness, definitely not shy. His harsh wiry outer
coat, beard and eyebrows should be hand stripped, just like
a terrier's coat, to maintain its wiry texture.
Dachsies
make wonderful, fun loving pets, whose exercise
needs are minimal. They adapt well to city or country life.
These hounds live to eat, so, the calories must be closely
watched. Dachshund puppies are trainable, maturing
to become superb loyal family members and
exceptional watchdogs. |
Information:
In the United States, Dachshunds are bred and shown in two sizes, Standard and Miniature.
Miniatures are not a separate classification but compete in a class division for "11
lb. (5.0 kg) and under at 12
months of age and older." With the three different coats, they are considered to be three
different varieties:
Longhaired
Dachshund;Smooth Dachshund; Wirehaired Dachshund
The maximum weight of the Miniature Dachshund is 11 lb. (5 kg).
The weight of the Standard Dachshund is usually between 16 and 32 lb. (7.3 - 14.5 kg).
In Canada and Britain Miniature Dachshunds and Standard Dachshunds are considered two
separate varieties. With the three different coat types, Dachshunds are considered six
different varieties.
